Remarks Outermost known moon of Jupiter

S / 2003 J 2 is one of the smaller moons of the planet Jupiter .

discovery

S / 2003 J 2 was discovered by astronomers at the University of Hawaii on February 5, 2003 . The moon has not yet been given an official name - the moons of Jupiter are usually female figures from Greek mythology - but is provisionally referred to as S / 2003 J 2 according to the system of the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

Orbit data

S / 2003 J 2 is the outermost known moon of Jupiter. It orbits the planet at an average distance of 29,541,000 km in 979 days, 23 hours and 46 minutes. The track has an eccentricity of 0.2255. With an inclination of 160.638 °, the orbit is retrograde ; that is, the moon moves around the planet against the direction of rotation of Jupiter.

It does not belong to any known group of moons which orbit Jupiter on common orbits.

The limit of Jupiter's gravitational influence is defined by the Hill sphere , the radius of which is approximately . Where and are Jupiter's semi-major axis and mass, and the mass of the sun . This results in a radius of around 52 million kilometers. S 2003 J 2 is up to 36 million km away from Jupiter on its eccentric orbit. Moons further away may be lost.

Physical data

S / 2003 J 2 has a diameter of about 2 km. Its density is estimated at 2.6 g / cm³. It is probably made up mainly of silicate rock. It has a very dark surface with an albedo of 0.04, i.e. that is, only 4% of the incident sunlight is reflected. Its apparent brightness is 23.2 m .
