The discovery of Greip by Scott S. Sheppard , David C. Jewitt , Jan Kleyna and Brian G. Marsden on recordings from January 5 to May 1, 2006 was announced on June 26, 2006.

Greip initially received the provisional designation S / 2006 S 4.

The moon was named after Greip , one of the nine Aegir daughters from Nordic mythology .
