David C. Jewitt (* 1958 in North London ) is Professor of Astronomy at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Together with his doctoral student Jane Luu , he discovered the first object of the Kuiper belt in 1992 : the Cubewano (15760) Albion (formerly "1992 QB 1 ").

David C. Jewitt

Jewitt earned his bachelor's degree in astronomy from the University of London in 1979 and his master's degree from Caltech in 1980 , where he received his PhD in 1983 . In 1983 he became an assistant professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and moved to the University of Hawaii in 1988 as an associate professor and from 1993 as a professor. In 2009 he became a professor at UCLA, where he heads the Institute for Planets and Exoplanets.

In 2007 he was Adjunct Professor at the National Central University in Taiwan.

His research is particularly concerned with the objects of the outer solar system , of which he and his colleagues have discovered 39 so far, and the physical properties of comets . In addition, he was involved in the discovery of several small moons on the planet Jupiter .

For 2012 he was awarded the Shaw Prize in Astronomy with Jane Luu and the Kavli Prize in Astrophysics with Jane Luu and Michael E. Brown . In 1998 he became a Fellow of University College London and in 1996 Scientist of the Year in Hawaii. In 1996 he received an Exceptional Achievement Award from NASA . The asteroid (6434) Jewitt was named after him in 1996. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (2005), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2005) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science . In 2006 he became an honorary professor at the National Astronomical Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and in 2012 he became an external member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences .
