Herse (also Jupiter L) is one of the smaller moons of the planet Jupiter .
discovery
Herse was discovered by astronomers at the University of Hawaii on February 6, 2003 . It was initially given the provisional designation S / 2003 J 17 and was officially named after Herse on November 9, 2009 , the daughter of King Kekrops from Greek mythology .
Orbit data
Herse orbits Jupiter at an average distance of 22,992,000 km in 714 days, 11 hours and 17 minutes. The orbit has an eccentricity of 0.2378. With an inclination of 164.917 ° to the ecliptic , the orbit is retrograde , i.e. that is, the moon moves around the planet against the direction of rotation of Jupiter.
Due to its orbital properties, Herse is assigned to the Carme Group , named after the Jupiter moon Carme .
Physical data
Herse has a diameter of about 2 km. Their density is estimated at 2.6 g / cm³. It is presumably composed mainly of silicate rock and has a very dark surface with an albedo of 0.04, i.e. that is, only 4% of the incident sunlight is reflected.
