Iocaste (also Jupiter XXIV) is one of the smaller outer moons of the planet Jupiter .
discovery
Iocaste was discovered by astronomers at the University of Hawaii on November 23, 2000 . It was initially given the provisional designation S / 2000 J 3.
The moon was named after Iokaste , the mother of Oedipus from Greek mythology .
Orbit data
Iocaste orbits Jupiter at a mean distance of 21,269,000 km in 631 days and 12 hours. The track has an eccentricity of 0.216. With an inclination of 149.4 ° from the local Laplace plane , the orbit is retrograde, i.e. that is, the moon moves around the planet against the direction of rotation of Jupiter.
Due to its orbital properties, Iocaste is assigned to the Ananke group , named after the Jupiter moon Ananke .
Physical data
Iocaste has a diameter of about 5 km. Their density is estimated at 2.6 g / cm³. It is presumably composed mainly of silicate rock and has a very dark surface with an albedo of 0.04, i.e. that is, only 4% of the incident sunlight is reflected. Their apparent brightness is 21.8 m .
