Harpalyke (also Jupiter XXII) is one of the smallest known outer moons of the planet Jupiter .

discovery

Harpalyke was discovered by astronomers at the University of Hawaii on November 23, 2000 . It was initially given the provisional designation S / 2000 J 5.

The moon was named after Harpalyke , a daughter of Clymenos from Greek mythology .

Orbit data

Harpalyke orbits Jupiter at a mean distance of 21,105,000 km in 623 days and 7 hours. The track has an eccentricity of 0.226. With an inclination of 148.6 ° from the local Laplace plane , the orbit is retrograde; that is, the moon moves around the planet against the direction of rotation of Jupiter.

Due to its trajectory characteristics, harpalyke is assigned to the Ananke group , named after the Jupiter moon Ananke .

Physical data

Harpalyke has a mean diameter of about 4 km. Their density is estimated at 2.6 g / cm³. It is probably made up mainly of silicate rock. Harpalyke has a very dark surface with an albedo of 0.04, i. that is, only 4% of the incident sunlight is reflected. Their apparent brightness is 22.2 m .
