Callichore (Jupiter XLIV) is one of the smaller moons of the planet Jupiter .

discovery

S / 2003 J 11 was discovered by astronomers at the University of Hawaii on February 6, 2003 . On March 30, 2005, the moon was officially named Kallichore by the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

The moon was named after Kallirrhoë , a figure in Greek mythology.

Orbit data

Kallichore orbits Jupiter at an average distance of 24,043,000 km in 764.7 days. The track has an eccentricity of 0.264. With an inclination of 165.5 ° the orbit is retrograde, i.e. that is, the moon moves around the planet against the direction of rotation of Jupiter.

Due to its orbital properties, it is assigned to the Carme group , named after the Jupiter moon Carme . Kallichore is the extreme known member of the group.

Physical data

Kallichore has a diameter of about 2 km. Its density is estimated at 2.6 g / cm³. It is probably made up mainly of silicate rock. It is likely to have a very dark surface with an albedo of 0.04; that is, only 4% of the incident sunlight is reflected. Its apparent brightness is 23.7 m .
