The red-winged pytilia ( Pytilia phoenicoptera ), also Aurora Astrild written is an African bird art from the family of finches . There are two subspecies. The aurora trike is one of the ornamental birds kept occasionally.

description

The 12 to 13 centimeter long aurora tiger is a magnificent finch, the plumage of which is predominantly gray. There is some red on the wing covers. Males and females are very similar. However, females have a little less red on the wing-coverts and less pronounced stripes on the underside. While females sing only very rarely, the male sings mostly in a flute. At courtship, a long drawn-out thaaar calls out .

The clutch consists mainly of four eggs, which are alternately incubated by both parent birds for 14 days. The young birds stay in the nest for 18 to 22 days and are then looked after by the parent birds for another two to three weeks.

Distribution area and habitat

The aurora tress occurs only in a narrow strip that stretches from West Africa almost to East Africa. The nominate form Pytilia phoenicoptera phoenicoptera occurs in the western part of the distribution area, which extends from northern Nigeria through Senegal and Gambia . The range also includes Guinea-Bissau , Guinea , Sierra Leone , Mali , Ivory Coast , Burkina Faso , Ghana , Togo and Benin . It is a common species in W National Park and Yankari National Park . The distribution area of Pytilia phoenicoptera emini joins in North Cameroon and occurs over the Central African Republic and the south of Sudan , where it is relatively sparsely represented up to the Democratic Republic of the Congo . It is particularly common there in Garamba National Park . In Uganda it is particularly common in Kidepo Valley National Park and Murchison Falls National Park .

Its habitat is the dry bush savannah and the steppe. The Auroraas live there hidden between bushes, tall herbs and grasses. It is also found near localities. Its diet consists of grass and millet seeds. He also likes to eat the seeds of sunflower plants . Animal food only plays a subordinate role in his diet. However, it does eat termites and other similarly sized insects.

attitude

The Auroraa was first imported to Germany in 1870 by Carl Hagenbeck . The first breeding in Germany succeeded a little later. Since 1953 the Auroraa has been offered regularly in the trade. They are considered to be very calm and quiet birds that are only aggressive in the immediate vicinity of the nest, even during the breeding season.

Among all the striped aurora, the aurora is the easiest species to breed, but this is not necessarily reflected in the number of offspring. Most of the birds on the market are bred.
