The Kidepo Valley National Park , also called Kidepo National Park , is a 1442 km² nature reserve in northeast Uganda , located directly on the southern border with South Sudan , where the 1050 km² Kidepo Reserve , which belongs to the same ecosystem, connects.
history
The Kidepo Valley National Park was established as a wildlife reserve in 1958 under the British colonial government . For this purpose, the Ik people were expelled from the fertile Kidepo Valley, which contributed to a famine among the Ik. In 1962 the reserve was converted into a national park.
Geography and ecology
The landscape of the Kidepo Valley National Park consists of two valleys with the two rivers Kidepo and Narus and is surrounded by a mountainous landscape with Mount Morungole . The vegetation is characterized by tree and bush savannah , densely packed Borassus palms can be found on the banks of the Kidepo River. Dense forest grows on the up to 2,740 m high Napore Mountains in the southwest of the park. In the rest of the national park, the height above sea level is 900 to 1200 m, the annual precipitation 450 to 1000 mm.
The animal world , which can hardly be found in other parts of Uganda, consists of 86 species of mammals and around 500 species of birds . Among the permanent residents are greater kudu , hartebeest , Oribi and Rothschild giraffes and lions , leopards , striped hyenas and cheetahs while elephant herds that about include a total of 600 animals and herds African buffalo seek in finding temporary water points the otherwise dry park .

The park is rarely visited because it is difficult to get to, especially in the rainy season , which runs from April to September.
