history

The Free State Project was officially established on September 1, 2001. One of the initiators was the then Yale -Student and now an assistant professor of the University of Buffalo , Jason Sorens .

A number of members of the Free State Project were elected to public office at the local and state levels in New Hampshire, representing both major US parties, Republicans and Democrats . When the New Hampshire House of Representatives was elected in 2010, at least 12 Free Staters entered parliament, mainly representing the Republican Party. Members of the Free State Project won or held roughly the same number of seats in the following 2012 election, although the Republicans suffered a heavy electoral defeat and lost their majority to the Democrats.

In December 2012, New Hampshire Democratic MP , Cynthia Chase , described Free State Project activists as "the greatest threat the state faces today," regretting the failure to ban libertarian immigration to New Hampshire and suggested that instead "restrict the freedoms they believe to be found here". These statements sparked national controversy.

Participants are members who have committed to moving to New Hampshire within a certain time window once the number of participants has reached 20,000, with more than 1,000 participants having moved to New Hampshire early ( early movers ). Friends outside New Hampshire are members who support the Free State Project, but have no intention of moving to New Hampshire themselves. Friends within New Hampshire state are locals who cannot commit to moving to New Hampshire because they already live there.
