John Stossel (born March 6, 1947 in Chicago Heights , Illinois ) is an American journalist and television presenter . He is particularly known for his appearances on ABC broadcast 20/20 as well as his one-hour special programs for ABC News, the material of which is also used as teaching material in schools. Since late 2009 he has been under contract with Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network .

For his journalistic work, Stossel won 19 Emmy Awards , was honored five times by the National Press Club for his consumer reporting , and received the George Polk Award for Outstanding Local Reporting and the George Foster Peabody Award . He is also the author of the bestsellers Give me a break (2004) and Myths, lies, and downright stupidity (2006).

Life

Stossel grew up as a child of German emigrants in Wilmette , Illinois, attended New Trier High School in Winnetka and received his BA in Psychology from Princeton University in 1969 .

He then worked for four years as a researcher for the local NBC station KGW-TV in Portland, Oregon , and then for eight years as an editor for consumer issues in New York City for the local CBS station WCBS-TV. While at WCBS-TV, Stossel received the 1978 George Polk Award in the Local radio and television category .

From 1981 to 2009 Stossel worked, initially as a correspondent, for ABCs 20/20 , where he soon became known for his regular contributions with the titles Family Fix and Give Me a Break . On ABC he also appeared on Good Morning America and has been responsible for several one-hour primetime specials for ABC News since 1994 ; the first show, Are We Scaring Ourselves to Death? April 21st featured excessive media alarmism ; other topics included victimization (1994), gender differences in humans (1995), lawyers in the USA (1996), happiness research (1996), junk science (1997), free riders (1997), marriage and lust (1997), greed ( 1998), victimless crimes (1998), the US economy on a global scale (1999), freedom of children in custody issues (1999) and freedom (2000).

From May 23, 2003 until he left ABC, Stossel co- hosted 20/20 .

Stossel has been with Fox News Channel (FNC) and Fox Business Network (FBN) since October 2009; his move to the Fox Network at the same time as paid speech engagements against the health reform efforts of the Obama administration was followed critically. Since December of that year he has hosted his own program on FBN, a weekly, one-hour talk show called Stossel . He also has regular guest appearances on the FNC show The O'Reilly Factor with Bill O'Reilly .

Stossel speaks at the Free State Project's New Hampshire Liberty Forum , March 19, 2007.

Stossel identifies himself as libertarian and has been an avowed advocate of the free market economy since the early 1990s . In this context he opposes government intervention in the market, the unintended consequences of which are usually bad for people. In his own program, Stossel deals with a variety of socio-political issues from a markedly libertarian perspective, such as the controversy over global warming , the war on drugs and free trade , but also books such as Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged or FA Hayek's The Road to Serfdom . The guests who appeared on the show include a. Stephen J. Dubner , T. Boone Pickens , Steven F. Hayward , Paul Ryan , John Francis Crowley , Dennis Kucinich , Christina Hoff Sommers , Roy Spencer , PJ O'Rourke , Andrew Napolitano , Wendy McElroy , Lou Dobbs , Johan Norberg , Ayaan Hirsi Ali , Bjørn Lomborg , Benjamin R. Barber and Sean Hannity .

Prizes and awards

In April 1996, Stossel received a Peabody Award for the 20/20 article Truth on Trial on false child abuse allegations at a daycare center in Massachusetts.

criticism

From 1994 Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR) began to criticize Stossel's journalistic integrity. In October 1996, Stossel and four other correspondents were sued by ABC News for illegally making sound recordings in Maryland as part of research into Multiple Chemical Sensitivity ; however, the lawsuits were dismissed on December 6th for lack of evidence.

In a contribution presented by Stossel and broadcast for the first time on February 4, 2000 for 20/20 about organic food ("The Food You Eat"), he claimed that research commissioned by ABC had shown that the products of conventional agriculture were no longer necessarily Pesticide residues exhibited as organic food. When, after research by the environmental organization Environmental Working Group, it turned out that the scientists commissioned by ABC had not carried out the investigations presented by Stossel as evidence for his claims and that ABC repeated the broadcast despite protests, a bigger scandal broke out at the end of July when The New York Times took up the topic. The responsible producer was given a forced leave of absence for a month without pay, Stossel was warned by ABC and apologized to the viewers on August 11th in 20/20 . After the program was first broadcast, articles had appeared in various publications that pointed to possible conflicts of interest of Stossel.

Before the broadcast of a special on environmental policy in the summer of 2001, the parents of the schoolchildren interviewed withdrew their consent to the interviews because ABC had concealed Stossel's involvement and pretended that the program was a contribution to Earth Day and that Stossel also had the Asked leading questions to children ; ABC then cut the interviews from the special. In connection with this special, at the end of the year or beginning of 2002, The Nation published several articles about Stossel, which in turn addressed possible conflicts of interest of Stossel.
