Patrick Jake O'Rourke (born November 14, 1947 in Toledo , Ohio ) is an American political satirist, journalist and writer. He studied at Miami University (Ohio) and Johns Hopkins University .

According to his own statements, O'Rourke was a left-wing hippie during his student days , but went through a Damascene change in the 1970s . Today he is regarded as a libertarian , partly conservative humorist and political observer and avowed opponent of the American left (American: liberals ) with a tendency towards the Republicans . He himself proposed, in his typical sarcastic manner, the formation of two new parties: one for those who would support his own ideological mix and one for those who would be of the exact opposite view.

O'Rourke wrote for several different publications before joining the satirical magazine National Lampoon in 1973, where he was editor-in-chief and wrote articles such as "Foreigners Around the World". After O'Rourke went into business for himself, his works appeared in magazines such as Playboy , Vanity Fair , Car and Driver , and Rolling Stone . He later became head of the foreign editorial team at Rolling Stone , for which he worked until 2001. In 1996 he served as the conservative part on the pro and contra debit show 60 Minutes . According to a "60-Minutes" account, O'Rourke is the most quoted living man in the Penguin Book of Humorous Quotations .

His article "How to Drive Fast on Drugs While Getting Your Wing-Wang Squeezed and Not Spill Your Drink.", Published in March 1979 in National Lampoon , is considered an early exponent of gonzo journalism . The article later appeared in his first book, Republican Party Reptile (1987), which became a bestseller . The book revolves around O'Rourke's economic and geopolitical views of the time, which were remarkably liberal, including his views on sex and drugs.

O'Rourke is currently Henry L. Mencken vv Fellow at the Cato Institute and a regular correspondent for the American literary magazine The Atlantic Monthly and the right-wing The Weekly Standard .

O'Rourke has been married twice and has three children, two daughters and a son, the youngest of whom was born in 2003.
