Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr. (* 1 July 1944 in Boston ), widely known as Lew Rockwell , is an American libertarian political commentator, economist of the Austrian school and activist . He coined the term paleolibertarianism .

biography

He is Roman Catholic and holds a degree in English from Tufts University . From 1978 to 1982 he worked as Ron Paul's chief of staff in his convention bureau. Over the years he had a working relationship with Paul as contributing editor on The Ron Paul Investment Letter; as advisor to Paul's 1988 Libertarian Party campaign for President of the United States ; and as vice-chairman of the Exploratory Talks Committee for Paul's abandoned candidacy, 1992, for the Republican Party's nomination for president.

In 1982 Rockwell founded the Ludwig von Mises Institute in Auburn, Alabama and is its president.

He is also the Vice President of the Center for Libertarian Studies in Burlingame , California and the editor of the political weblog LewRockwell.com. Rockwell was closely associated with his teacher and colleague, Murray Rothbard until Rothbard's death in 1995. Rockwell's political ideology, like the Rothbards in his later years, combines some form of anarcho-capitalism with cultural conservatism and the Austrian school . Rockwell described so-called " ecologism " as "an ideology as merciless and messianic as Marxism ." ("An ideology as pitiless and Messianic as Marxism.")

Rockwell came under fire when the libertarian magazine Reason suggested in January 2008 that Rockwell had been a ghostwriter for Ron Paul's newsletter in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when it published homophobic and racist statements several times. Rockwell denied the allegations.

Lew Rockwell's website contains a selection of articles in opposition to war and imperialism . The page also contains posts critically examining the United States' involvement in World War II , speculation about the end of the United States as a cohesive union, and claims that the Western world is again threatened by a cross between fascism and socialism when politicians and states centralize their power. These articles are sometimes controversial and have received harsh criticism from some American Conservatives.
