Geographical location

Route in yellow. The existing Addis Ababa – Djibouti railway line in red

The line is the first in Ethiopia to be an inland line with a north-south course, after the railway connection between the eastern port of Djibouti and the capital Addis Ababa in the west has been established so far . The new route will branch off the existing route at Awash (988 m above sea level ) in a northerly direction and initially end at Hara Gebeya (2122 m above sea level) near Weldiya (Woldia).

Technical parameters

The route will be 388 kilometers long. In addition, 40 km of sidings will be built . The line is single-track , but has 18 km of double-track sections for train crossings . Six tunnels had to be built, including the longest railway tunnel in Ethiopia at 1530 m . Its breakdown took place in September 2016. The line is operated with AC voltage of 25 kV, 50  Hz and equipped with ETCS Level 1 .

The traction current for operation is carried along the route with a high voltage of 230 kV; it supplies three substations and transmits 130 kV with five connected substations. There are feed points in the overhead line every approx. 48 km .

Construction and operation

The line has been under construction since 2012 and the tracks have been laid since October 2016. The construction is carried out by the Turkish Yapi Merkezi . The line is scheduled to go into operation in October 2018. The construction costs are estimated at almost 1.5 billion euros .
