The Ash Shibani School ( Arabic مدرسة الشيباني, DMG madrasat aš-Šībānī ; also al-Shibani ) is a Syrian cultural and educational institution in Aleppo . The asch-Schibani-Schule is home to the branch of the German Goethe Institute in Syria and a branch of the Aga Khan Foundation . There is also a museum in this complex about the history of Aleppo. The building consists of two floors.

History of the structure

The building served as a church building in pre-Islamic times . After the Islamization of Aleppo, it was used as an Islamic educational institution. It was rebuilt in the 12th century. In the 17th century the building was acquired by the ash-Shibani family and was named as Khan ash-Shibani at that time . In the 19th century it was acquired by the French Roman Catholic Franciscan Order, who set up the Terre-Sainte College there. Restoration work began in 1853 and the college opened in 1859. The entire building complex was not fully restored until 1879. In the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the college had a significant influence on the educational and political classes in Syria. In 1934, large parts of the building complex were demolished and the Franciscan college moved to the then partially Christian district of al-Aziziyya .

In 1967 the college was converted into the Syrian Partisans Enrollment Institute of the Ba'ath Party . The building complex later fell to the Syrian government and was used as a tobacco store. In 2001, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, in cooperation with the Syrian government, began to convert the building complex and use it again as an educational facility in memory of its historical roots. The renovation work was completed in December 2006.
