Ascocentrum garayi , now Vanda garayi

Systematics and botanical history

The genus Ascocentrum is counted to the subtribe Aeridinae. Crosses with numerous related genera such as Arachnis , Phalaenopsis , Renanthera and Vanda were realized.

Some species of the Ascocentrum genus were known as early as the 19th century and were described as saccolabium . In the years from 1913 to 1921 Rudolf Schlechter and Johannes Jacobus Smith named a total of seven species in the Ascocentrum genus . Other species were described mainly by Seidenfaden and Christenson from 1970 onwards. As a result of DNA studies, the genus has now been revised and integrated into the Vanda genus .
