Life

Johannes Jacobus Smith was born in Antwerp , Belgium, in 1867 and grew up in Amsterdam . At the suggestion of his teacher JC Costerus, he trained as a gardener at the Groenewegen nursery. Further professional positions were one year in the Kew Gardens in London and two years in Brussels , first in the orchid nursery Linden, then in the botanical garden.

Again it was Costerus who suggested that Smith take up employment in the East Indian colonies. From 1891 he was responsible for a coffee plantation there, but was more interested in the species-rich jungle in the area and soon accepted an invitation from Melchior Treub to move to the Buitenzorg botanical garden . There he advanced from assistant to the curator to employee and later head of the herbarium, and finally from 1922 to director of the botanical garden. During his work, he undertook numerous field studies and trips to the Indonesian islands. He published in particular on the orchid flora and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Utrecht in 1910 for his scientific achievements . After retiring due to illness and returning to the Netherlands, he kept in close contact with the herbaria in Utrecht and Leiden , and numerous writings were created during this time. His greenhouse housed numerous tropical orchids, but the collection was lost in World War II due to a lack of heating material. Smith died in 1947 at the age of eighty.
