Michael Ashwin Satyandre Adhin (born June 10, 1980 in Paramaribo , Suriname ) was Minister for Education and Popular Development and Vice President of Suriname from 2015 to 2020 .

Life

Adhin is of Hindustan descent and comes from a family background of education, upbringing, and culture.

Study, job

After completing his school education in Paramaribo, he completed an engineering degree in electrical engineering at the University of Delft as a Master of Science .

He then worked as a project manager for various telecommunications companies in Suriname and was a lecturer in electrical engineering at the Anton de Kom University in Paramaribo.

From 2011 to 2013 he was also chairman of the Culturele Unie Suriname (CUS) .

Political career

Until his appointment and swearing-in on July 3, 2013 as Minister for Education and Popular Development in the Bouterse cabinet , he did not appear politically. The office was renamed the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture in March 2015.

In the parliamentary elections on May 25, 2015 , he was elected for the Nationale Democratische Partij in De Nationale Assemblée (DNA) . Here he stood at the same time for his party as a vice-presidential candidate.

On July 14, 2015 Ashwin Adhin was from the Parliament elected Vice-President of the Republic of Suriname.

The inauguration , inauguration and renewed swearing-in of President Dési Bouterse took place on August 12, 2015 in the Anthony Nesty sports hall in Paramaribo.

In the parliamentary elections on May 25, 2020, the NDP lost ten seats compared to 2015, and also lost government responsibility. However, Adhin was elected as an NDP candidate in the Wanica district and thus a member of parliament for the opposition party.
