The Asian Relations Conference took place between March 23 and April 2, 1947 in New Delhi and was organized by the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) founded in 1943 . The host was Jawaharlal Nehru , Prime Minister of the Indian interim government. A few months before Indian independence, the conference was the first meeting of members of Asian independence movements.

It took place with the aim of “ bringing together the leading men and women [sic!] Of Asia to discuss issues that affect all people on the continent, with a focus on social, economic and cultural issues, with the aim of mutual contact and understanding ".

In the run-up to the conference, invitations were sent to numerous non-governmental organizations with goals similar to those of ICWA. Delegates from 26 countries eventually attended the conference, along with observers from the UK , USA and Australia, as well as representatives from the Arab League and the United Nations . Topics included the improvement of living conditions in Asia, cooperation between Asian countries and the role of India in Asia and the world.

The official list of participants names 231 people who were spread across the following countries (number of delegates / number of observers):

Delegates of the States of Asia. The Asian Relations Conference was one of the few occasions on which the Tibetan state appeared internationally.

Since 2009, annual Asian Relations Conferences have taken place again , also organized by the ICWA and the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies , which was founded in 1996, following the tradition of the 1947 event.
