Asios of Samos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Asios of Samos , the son of Amphiptolemus, was an ancient Greek poet of the Archaic period.

Perhaps he lived as early as 700 BC. BC, but more likely after Hesiod , perhaps in the 6th century BC. He came from Samos and Athenaios calls him the "old Sami poet" . Asios wrote epics and elegies , the content of which is not known. Pausanias mentions that he uses his works for their mythological information. From his epics only quotations from other ancient writers (Athenaios, Pausanias, Strabo , Apollodor and a few others) have been preserved, who deal exclusively with family relationships. His elegies, written in the usual meter , have been lost with the exception of a few given by Athenaeus.
