from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Asko German department store AG was a German public limited company in 1996 through the merger with Kaufhof Holding AG and Deutsche SB-Kauf AG and Metro AG merged.

history

In 1880 the retail company based in Saarbrücken was initially founded as the "Saarbrücker Eisenbahn-Konsumverein". In 1921 it was renamed “Allgemeine Saarkonsum GmbH” for short “ASKO”. In 1933 all consumer associations and cooperatives were subordinated to the " German Labor Front " (DAF) and in 1941 all organizations were dissolved and their assets were confiscated. On August 8, 1946, the cooperative was re-established under the name “Asko Saarbrücken” or “Asko Saarpfalz” and in 1972 it was converted into “Asko Lebensmittelfilial- und Kaufhaus AG”. This initially led to an expansion beyond the borders of the Saarland. Until 1982 the company was part of the co op group . The company has been called "Asko Deutsche Kaufhaus AG" since 1977 and has developed into an amalgamation of different corporate divisions. The food segment was pushed back in favor of department stores and hardware stores. In 1978, Praktiker Bau- und Heimwerkermärkte AG was founded.

Asko shareholders in 1989 included:

  • Metro Cash & Carry
  • West LB (10%)
  • Behoga Holding and the
  • Lonrho Handel GmbH

In 1990 Metro Cash & Carry joined Asko as the majority shareholder with 50%. In 1992 Metro Asko took over completely. On July 31, 1996, the group of companies with its more than 350 branches merged into Metro AG.
