Asmaa Mahfuz

Asmaa Mahfuz ( Arabic أسماء محفوظ, DMG Asmāʾ Maḥfūẓ ; * February 1, 1985 in Cairo ) is an Egyptian political activist, blogger and co-founder of the April 6 Youth Movement and one of the best-known members of the Revolutionary Youth Coalition .

Life

She became one of the symbolic figures of the 2011 revolution in Egypt . With her now famous video on Facebook from January 18, 2011 (against the government of Husni Mubarak , demand for freedom, basic democratic rights and social justice ), she contributed to the fact that hundreds of thousands of Egyptians on January 25, 2011 in Tahrir Square in Cairo gathered to protest.

In December 2011 she was awarded the EU Parliament's prize for freedom of expression, the Sakharov Prize .
