Asociación Deportiva Atenas (mostly just called Atenas ) is an Argentine sports club from Cordoba . He is best known for his activity in basketball , in which he is one of the most successful clubs in South America. Since the name comes from the Greek capital Athens , the club is popularly known as los griegos or el griego (the Greeks or the Greeks) according to the Argentine tradition of giving clubs single nicknames .

The club was founded on March 7, 1938 by members of a former tennis club. Today he is active in numerous sports, including basketball, athletics , swimming , cycling , gymnastics , judo , karate and chess .

In basketball, Atenas became known from the 1940s and quickly became the dominant team in the province of Cordoba; the club won the provincial championship between 1948 and 1957 in a row, with the exception of 1953. When the Argentine professional basketball league was founded in the 80s, the series of successes began at the national and later international level. With eight titles, he became the record champions of the Argentine League and also won six South American-wide titles between 1993 and 2004.
