Assimi Goita

Assimi Goïta (* 1983 ) is a Malian military officer. Goïta served as a colonel in the Malian armed forces . With Ismaël Wagué , Malick Diaw and Sadio Camara, he led the coup on August 19, 2020 and took over the chairmanship of the National Committee for the Welfare of the People (CNSP), which temporarily ruled after the overthrow of President Keïta, and served as head of state. He was Vice President of Mali from September 25, 2020 to May 26, 2021. He has been Bah N'Daw since May 26, 2021 after the previous president was deposedagain President of Mali. The Constitutional Court of Mali confirmed on May 28, 2021 that Goïta should lead the affairs of state as the new interim head of state. The European Union wants to continue its EUTM military operation .

biography

Assimi Goïta was born in 1983. As the son of an officer in the Malian armed forces, he was trained at the military academies of Mali and attended in particular the Prytanée militaire de Kati and the École militaire interarmes de Koulikoro .

Goïta served as a colonel in the battalion of the autonomous special forces, the special unit of the Malian armed forces. He heads the Malian special forces in the center of the country with the rank of colonel. He is therefore confronted with the jihadist uprising in Mali. Goïta acts as chairman of the National Committee for the Salvation of the People, a group of rebels who have pledged to hold new elections to replace Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta.

Goïta received training in the USA, France and Germany and has experience working with special forces in the US Army.
