AssiStep railing and grab handle

AssiStep (Assitech AS) is a stair aid for seniors and people with walking difficulties. The system consists of a railing system attached to the wall, to which a handle is attached. The product was developed in Trondheim ( Norway ) and is available in 16 countries.

application

The handle guarantees the user support thanks to the patented locking mechanism. The use is similar to a rollator . When walking up the stairs, the user holds onto the handle and moves it an arm's length away from him. If pressure is exerted on the handle, it locks into place.

Specifications

The product can be used by people between 120 cm and 200 cm tall and supports a maximum body weight of 120 kg. The railing consists of a standard stainless steel railing with a diameter of 4.2 cm and protrudes 9.6 cm from the wall. During use, the handle sticks out 45.6 cm from the wall, but when not in use it can be folded up and then only sticks out 18.4 cm from the wall.

development

AssiStep is a Norwegian development that was developed by former students of the Technical and Natural Sciences University of Norway in collaboration with the occupational therapy school in Trondheim. The goal was to develop an alternative to the electric stairlift that is fully mechanical and keeps the user in motion. Product development took three years and the product was launched in Norway in 2015. The product has been available in 16 countries since the beginning of 2020. The start of development and production of the stair rollator was financed by a crowdfunding campaign that raised 2 million crowns.

The AssiStep has received multiple awards or nominations:

  • The award for the "best solution" by the Silver Eco Aging Well Award 2019
  • Nominated for the award for the best Nordic innovation
  • The award for the best Nordic cooperation project in 2016 by the Nordic Council
  • Second place in the 2013 edition of the Venture Cup, a Scandinavian business plan competition

Certification

AssiStep has been tested and certified by TÜV Nord . This corresponds to the technical safety standards EN ISO 12182: 2012 (mobility aid for older people) and EN ISO 14971: 2012 (medical devices).
