The Associação dos Cidadãos Unidos de Macau ( Portuguese for Association of United Citizens of Macau , Chinese 澳門 民 聯 協 進 會 ) is a political party in the Macau Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China . Since the 2017 general election , the party has two seats in the Macau Legislative Assembly .

organization

For the 2017 parliamentary elections, the party ran with two electoral lists . In addition to their previous electoral list with the name Associação dos Cidadãos Unidos de Macau , the electoral list with the name Associação dos Cidadãos para o Desenvolvimento de Macau also belonged to the party. However, as with most parties in Macau, there is actually an organization behind both election lists , in this case the Aliança de Povo de Instituição de Macau ( Portuguese for Macau People's Alliance , Chinese 民眾 建 澳 聯盟 ).

history

The party ran for the first time in the 2005 parliamentary elections and received 20,695 votes, which corresponds to 16.58% of the total vote. However, the party was not formed as an organization until May 1, 2008. This gave the party two seats in the Legislative Assembly of Macau and held that number until the 2013 general election , where it rose to be the strongest party with 26,385 votes and a share of 18.02%. In the 2017 parliamentary election, the party not only ran the previous election list Associação dos Cidadãos Unidos de Macau ; In addition to this electoral list, the electoral list with the name Associação dos Cidadãos para o Desenvolvimento de Macau also belonged to the party. This division was mainly for practical reasons, as this division made it easier to obtain two mandates under the applicable electoral law . However, both electoral lists are summarized here as the Associação dos Cidadãos Unidos de Macau . One member of the Legislative Assembly was elected from both lists, so that the party lost one seat. A total of 24,982 votes were cast on both electoral lists, which corresponds to a share of 14.47%.

Alignment

The party advocates the principle of “ one country, two systems ”. On the one hand, this principle should strengthen Macau's sense of national belonging to the People's Republic of China; on the other hand, the political system should continue to encompass capitalist and democratic freedoms. In addition to Chinese patriotism , the party also emphasizes Macau's right to have certain rights of autonomy . In particular, the current economic system should be retained in order to allow gambling in Macau in the future. The party supports gambling and the business of casinos because of the view that economic power can bring prosperity to all people in the future. In general, the party with its program is assigned to the pro-Beijing camp ; In addition to Chinese - conservative positions, the party also stands out for social services outside of political work.

The party is directly linked to the Aliança de Povo de Instituição de Macau organization . The Aliança de Povo de instituição de Macau represents the interests of from the province of Fujian originating immigrants in Macau, so in particular the interests of these immigrants are represented by the party. The support for the Associação dos Cidadãos Unidos de Macau by this immigrant group is correspondingly high.

criticism

In the 2013 general election, the party was embroiled in a bribery scandal. In this context, two people were sentenced to prison terms. There was also a suspicion against MPs of the party, but the MPs enjoy immunity and have therefore remained MPs.
