The Assura based in Pully is the medical insurance specialist Swiss insurance company . It has around 1,102,000 policyholders and achieved premium income of 3.4 billion Swiss francs in 2017. The core business of Assura is basic insurance according to the Health Insurance Act as well as supplementary insurance.

history

The company was founded in 1978 in the legal form of a foundation in Pully and initially had 8 employees and 430 insured persons. At the end of the 1980s, Assura opened branches in Geneva (1987), Neuchâtel (1988) and Freiburg (1989). With the opening of a branch in St. Gallen in 1993, Assura expanded into German-speaking Switzerland for the first time. This was followed by further branches in Zurich (1994), Bern (1995), Basel, Lucerne and Ticino (1996). In 2001 Assura SA was founded for the business area of ​​supplementary insurance.

In November 2012, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority placed Assura SA together with other companies in the same group under group supervision, suspended the boards of directors of the companies and appointed a representative as a body.

Boycott by the medical profession

Numerous doctors in the Argomed network refused to accept new patients in 2013 if they were insured with Assura. In 2015, however, Assura concluded managed care contracts with Argomed networks, initially in the cantons of Aargau, Solothurn and Lucerne.
