Astillero Río Santiago
Astillero Río Santiago (short: ARS) is a state-owned Argentine shipbuilding company with headquarters in Ensenada in the province of Buenos Aires . The shipyard is located near La Plata . According to the industry association Federación de la Industria Naval Argentina (FINA for short), ARS is by far the largest shipbuilding company in Argentina.
ARS, now part of the business division of the Ministry of Industry of the Province of Buenos Aires, was founded in 1934 as the state shipyard AFNE ( Astilleros y Fábricas Navales del Estado ) and was originally focused on the construction and maintenance of warships . In 1953 the name was changed to Astillero Río Santiago (ASR) . In 1969 ARS employed around 5500 people. In the 1990s, the Argentine shipbuilding industry experienced a dramatic decline. In the crisis year 2009, the production value fell by almost half.
In recent years mainly civilian ships have been built again, such as cargo ships , oil tankers and deep-sea tugs , which serve to support oil platforms. At ARS, six units (1967–1988) of the SD-14 freighters were built.
In 2011 ARS employed around 2,870 people. The ARS shipyard, located in the La Plata free zone, claims to be able to manufacture ships with a load capacity of up to 80,000 t as well as offshore equipment of all kinds and also produce steel structures for use on the mainland . For example, ARS supplied the roof structure for the 53,000-seat soccer stadium in La Plata .
In March 2008, the ARS company opened its own shipbuilding museum.
