PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk is an Indonesian company that specializes in the production of palm oil . The company, headquartered in Jakarta, has over 19,335 employees (as of 2007).

Astra Agro Lestari is almost 80 percent owned by Astra International (as of January 2008), is listed on the Indonesian stock exchange and listed in the LQ-45 stock index there under the symbol AALI .

history

Astra Agro was founded in 1981 by PT Pandu Dian Pertiwi , a company owned by several influential Indonesian individuals.

PT Astra International began farming for the first time in 1983. Cassava was first grown on a 2000 hectare plantation , later rubber .

In 1984 the palm oil business began with the takeover of PT Tunggal Perkasa Plantation (TPP). Under a government program for small owners ( PIR Trans ), the company opened several palm oil plantations in Riau and Sumatra with a total of 10,000 hectares in 1986 .

In 1988, with PT Astra Agro Niaga (AAN), previously PT Suryaraya Cakrawala , and PT Suryaraya Bahtera (SRB), two subsidiaries were created that were responsible for the operation of the plantations .

In 1990 PT Astra International took a 20 percent stake in PT Astra Agro Niaga and 50 percent in PT Suryaraya Bahtera . Both companies merged on June 30, 1997 to form a holding company called PT Astra Agro Niaga , which was renamed PT Astra Agro Lestari Tbk (AAL) on August 21 of the same year .

From December 9, 1997, Astra Agro Lestari shares were issued on the Jakarta and Surabaya stock exchanges at a unit price of Rp 1,500 . In July 1999, additional bonus shares were issued. The first bonds worth 500 million Rp. Were listed on the Surabaya Stock Exchange in March 2000.

Ecological damage

In 2004 at least the company had a large inventory of land for development. It has seven concessions on bog in Riau , with a total area estimated at 20,000 hectares. According to Greenpeace (2007) it had seven concessions on bog in Kalimantan Tengah . Greenpeace also named hotspots on Astra Agro concessions in Riau, two of which are on moorland.

Joko Supriyono was or is an executive at Astra Agro and a palm oil lobby organization. He said companies have no choice but to keep planting protected areas.
