The astronomical station "Tycho Brahe" includes an observatory and a planetarium in Rostock , which has existed since 1965 in the Gartenstadt / Stadtweide district . Since its inception, it has mainly served to support school teaching. The institution is supported by the city of Rostock.

history

The observatory was built from March 1964 to August 1965 as part of an apprenticeship project of the then National Construction Agency (NAW) and opened on August 28, 1965. In the school year 1965/66 all astronomy lessons for 24 classes took place in the facility. Furthermore, the observatory has been offering further training events for teachers since 1967 with the aim of motivating them to learn astronomy in schools as well.

In December 1968 a Coudé refractor was installed as a stationary observation device. Until then, only non-permanently installed observation devices were used for scientific activities. A Zeiss Klein planetarium projector of type 1 (ZKP-1) was located in the planetarium from the start. With this projector approx. 5000 stars can be projected onto the ceiling of the planetarium. In 1971 the first working group of the German Cultural Association and Urania was founded .

In 1972 the first lectures and seminars were held for students at the University of Rostock and the Warnemünde University of Engineering . As a result, astronomical education should be conveyed as publicly as possible. With the opening of the “Astronomical Hiking Trail” in Warnemünde in 1975 , the distances in the planetary system (scale 1: 1,000,000,000) could be illustrated.

In August 1990 the planetarium turned 25. On the occasion of this anniversary, the observatory was named after the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe , who also worked in Rostock. In the school year 1991/92 the first framework curriculum for astronomy lessons in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was drawn up and applied by employees of the Astronomical Station . A general renovation of the entire building took place in 1999. Among other things, the basement was drained, the classroom refurnished and technically refurbished. The planetarium was given a new sky and in December 2010 the seating was completely modernized.

From the start of the astronomical station, the planetarium has been equipped with a ZKP-1 from 1965, which is used for various events. With this the northern and parts of the southern starry sky as well as the planets, the moon, the sun and the Milky Way can be represented. The dome has a diameter of 3 meters.

The classroom has up to 27 seats, digital audio and video equipment, various planetary globes, various models and a small astronomical library.

The astronomical station "Tycho Brahe" offers not only numerous courses but also public events. The lessons are organized in accordance with the applicable framework guidelines of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania or, on request, on special topics such as B. designed for rocket technology or space travel . For primary school students, the focus is on imparting basic knowledge and interdisciplinary information. Secondary schools can receive supplement and support in the subjects of geography, physics, German and astronomy. Since 2000, the Astronomical Station has also been offering holiday events for children from after-school care centers and day-care centers. The public events are organized by the Astronomical Association, which existed in 2003 as a support association of the Astronomical Station.

Others

One of the current projects of the “Tycho Brahe” astronomical station with the support of the Friends' Association is the construction of a “planetary garden” to clearly show the proportions of the planets and their order in relation to the sun. Visitors to the station will soon be able to wander through and explore this model of the planetary system.
