( Cuvier , 1819)

Astyanax fasciatus is afreshwater fishfrom the Rio-São Francisco basin in Brazil described in the family of the true tetras (Characidae).

Names

Originally the species was described as Chalceus fasciatus , the names Banded Rautenflecksalmler or American Streifensalmler have been proposed as a German name.

distribution

Between Mexico and Argentina (more precisely in Argentina, Belize, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, Uruguay and Venezuela) morphologically hardly distinguishable fish were found, which were therefore also assigned to this species, but according to recent genetic studies represent separate species. The Central American Astyanax alone could therefore be divided into 15 different species, some of which have even been described as independent by earlier authors (e.g. Tetragonopterus aeneus Günther 1860, Anoptichthys hubbsi Álvarez 1947, Anoptichthys jordani Hubbs & Innes 1936, Tetragonopterus mexicanus De Filippi 1853 or Tetragonopterus petenensis Günther 1864), which was not recognized by some ichthyologists. The actual Astyanax fasciatus would therefore be restricted to South America and probably to the Rio-São Francisco basin.

features

A. fasciatus is predominantly silver in color. The red-colored caudal fin lobes, a black, slightly diamond-shaped spot that begins behind the adipose fin and runs centrally from the tail root to the rear edge of the caudal fin, as well as a less pronounced vertical shoulder spot and, depending on the incidence of light, a narrow horizontal stripe in the upper third of the body are striking , beginning in front of the dorsal fin and reaching to the adipose fin. The other fins are more or less transparent, slightly yellowish or reddish in color. The eye is large, the snout is short and the mouth is terminal. Whether the maximum length of 16.8 cm given by FishBase relates to the nominate form is unknown, because Reis & Malabarba (2003) only give 10 cm.

According to current knowledge, the blind cave forms from Central America must be assigned to independent species such as Astyanax jordani .
