The length from the north-west to the south-east bank is 21.9 km, taking into account all branches (bulges Žalktynė, Vyriogala and Dubingiai ) the length is 29.7 km. It is the longest lake in Lithuania, with a maximum depth of 50.2 meters it is the third deepest in the country.
history
The alternative name comes from the historic Dubingiai Castle, which was built on a former island (now a peninsula) in the lake near the small town of Dubingiai on the northeastern shore . The Asveja lake is a glacial lake after its formation and resembles a river like comparable lakes in Lithuania ( Tauragnas , Sartai and Aisetas ), it is long, narrow and deep.
Since 1992, the lake has been the heart of the Asveja Regional Park , which is supposed to protect the Ice Age landscape with around 30 lakes, several villages, the aforementioned castle and a historic schoolhouse around the town of Dubingiai on an area of 11 589 hectares. The right Neris tributary Žeimena flows south of the nature reserve in a south-westerly direction, via which the Neris can be reached by canoe or kayak .
A special feature is the wooden bridge, which is 84 m long and crosses a 15 m deep section of the lake. It was inaugurated in 1934 by the then first President of the Republic Antanas Smetona and is still in use today.
