The "lively little song" by Walter Donaldson, written in F major in the form ABAB ', has a "clearly recognizable prelude with four notes ( Ev'ry little ... ) and its lovable four-bar phrases that are in jumps and steps descend. In contrast to this, the B-section is considerably wider, with long notes and ninth chords. ”The subtitle comes from the final line When night is falling and love is calling me home . Cliff Edwards (aka Ukelele Ike ) introduced the song at New York's Palace Theater.

First recordings and later cover versions

The musicians who covered the song from mid-1927 included Victor Arden & Phil Ohman , Eddie Miles , in London Newton Carlisle and Chick Endor , as well as Harry Reser (Columbia 921), Ruth Etting , Al Lynn's Music Masters and the Clicquot Club Eskimos . Most successful in the United States was the version by George Olsen and his Orchestra, with the singing of Bob Borger, Fran Frey & Bob Rice.

The discographer Tom Lord lists a total of 233 (as of 2015) cover versions in the field of jazz . a. by Isham Jones , Artie Shaw , Toots Mondello , Benny Goodman , Glenn Miller , Teddy Wilson , Tommy Dorsey , Les Paul , Miff Mole , Bobby Hackett , Eddie Condon , Red Nichols . The song was also used in several films; Marsha Hunt sang it in Music for Millions (1944), a trio of Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey and Paul Whiteman sang it in The Fabulous Dorseys (1947). Doris Day interpreted the song in the Ruth Etting biopic Love Me Or Leave Me (1955), Frank Sinatra in The Joker Is Wild (1957).
