Atara (bible)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Atara is in the Old Testament in the 1st book of the chronicles the second wife of Jerachmeel , the son of Hezron. She is the mother of Onam ( 1 Chr 2,26  EU ).

The Hebrew personal name עֲטָרָה 'ǎtārāh is a one-word name and means "crown". The Septuagint gives the name as Αταρα Atara , the Vulgate as Atara .

In the Palestinian Talmud (treatise Sanhedrin, chap. 2) it is discussed why, if Jerachmeel is the firstborn of Hezron, since he is first mentioned in 1 Chr 2.9  EU , the lineage is continued through his younger brother Ram. The reason given is: "He married a Canaanite woman to crown himself with her". This is an allusion to the name Atara ("crown").
