The Ataturk, Annesi ve Kadın Hakları Anıtı ( Eng . Monument to Ataturk, his mother and women's rights ) is a monument in the Karşıyaka district of the Turkish city of Izmir .

history

In May 1971 the city of Izmir organized a competition for a monument to the Turkish state founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in Karşıyaka. On November 10, 1971, the jury announced that the sculptor Tamer Başoğlu and the architect Erkal Güngören had emerged from the competition as winners. The monument, which was to be built on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of the republic and was to cost around 1.2 million lira, was erected in 1972/73 with the help of donations from the citizens of the district and inaugurated on October 26, 1973.

In May 2015 it was announced that the monument would be demolished due to dilapidation and replaced by a structurally identical but larger one. The governor of Izmir stated that the monument was now "a danger". The Izmir Regional Heritage Preservation Authority paved the way for the monument's renovation by stating that it was not a historically significant monument. After the tender in April 2017, a contract for 6.8 million lira was signed with the construction company. On June 12, 2017, the old memorial was torn down. An action for the annulment of the decision to demolish had previously been rejected by the competent administrative court.

The new monument was inaugurated on May 12, 2018 after a year of construction. The "Museum for the Recognition of Women", which was built on an area of 110 m² under the monument, was opened to visitors six months later on November 3, 2018. The life stories of a hundred women who have a special place in the history of the Republic of Turkey are illustrated in the museum. The monument was honored at the “International Property Awards 2018” in the categories “Mixed-Use Development” and “Best Public Services Development”.

description

The monument consists of seven flat concrete pillars that rise from the ground in a concave curve and, after passing through a bronze hoop, rise vertically. Originally only six pillars were envisaged, which should symbolize the six basic principles of Kemalism . However, following an objection from Mayor Osman Kibar ( Adalet Partisi ), seven columns were erected. The rise of the pillars symbolizes the development of women's rights in Turkey. The bronze belt shows the reliefs of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, his mother Zübeyde Hanım and Turkish women.

The original monument was 15.54 meters high and the bronze relief (3.8 meters above the ground) 1.4 meters high and 6.5 meters wide. The lowest pillar of the new monument is 35.5 meters high and the highest 41.7 meters. The bronze relief begins 9 meters above the ground and is 3.5 meters high.
