Zübeyde Hanım
Zübeyde Hanım (* 1857 in Langadas , Vilâyet Saloniki , today Greece ; † January 14, 1923 in Izmir ) was the mother of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk , the founding father of Turkey . Hanım is not her family name, but is the Turkish form of the nickname Chanum and means lady , which in the Turkish language is an expression of courtesy and respect.
Zübeyde was born in the village of Langadas (today the regional district of Thessaloniki ) in the Ottoman Empire as the daughter of a Turkish farmer. She was the only daughter of the Hacısofular family along with her two brothers.
She married Ali Rıza Efendi in 1878 and had six children with him: Fatma, Ömer, Ahmet, Makbule , Naciye and, in 1881, Mustafa. Four of them died at a young age. Since the marriage, she and her husband lived in the traditional Ottoman building in Thessaloniki, now known as the Ataturk House .
