Portrait of Ali Rıza Efendi (1876)

Ali Rıza Efendi (* 1839 in Selânik, today Thessaloniki , † 1888 ibid) was the father of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and the husband of Zübeyde Hanıms .

Life

Rıza was born in what is now Thessaloniki, which was then part of the Ottoman Empire . He grew up as a child of a Muslim family.

Ali Rıza's family comes from the village of Kodžadžik in the then Ottoman Empire and what is now North Macedonia , where a memorial house in honor of Ataturk was opened in September 2012. It is assumed and attested, along with other theories of ethnic origin, that Rıza is of Albanian descent. The journalist and expert Ataturk's Falih Rıfkı Atay, who claims that Ali Rıza is descended from Turks from Söke in Vilayet Aydın , takes a different view .

Rıza worked for a time as a customs officer in a remote post on the Macedonian border. Since his marriage to Zübeyde Hanım in 1878, he lived with her in the traditional Ottoman building in Thessaloniki, now known as the Ataturk House . When he died, his son Mustafa Kemâl was only seven years old.
