It is located in the north of the city on Avenue Paul Cézanne, on the upper floor of a small house on the Les Lauves hill . Paul Cézanne made some of his pictures here, including the last works of the Great Bathers . In the museum an attempt was made to recreate the working atmosphere of the artist. You can see his easel , paint pots, work clothes and objects that he used as motifs for his still lifes .
history
In November 1901, Paul Cézanne bought a small property from Joseph Bouquier on the Les Lauves hill above Aix in order to set up a new studio. At the time, the studio was still outside the city and was surrounded by 7,000 square meters of agricultural land on which olive and fig trees grew. The house could be completed after ten months of construction.
In 1904, the art theorist Émile Bernard briefly moved into the ground floor of the studio.
After Cézanne's death in 1906, the studio was closed for fifteen years. In 1921, Cézanne's son sold it to Marcel Provence , who lived here until his death in 1951. In 1952, James Lord and John Rewald founded the Cézanne Memorial Committee to save the studio from demolition. They bought the studio with US donations and gave it away to the University of Aix-Marseille . The studio museum opened on June 8, 1954 and was acquired by the city of Aix-en-Provence in 1969.
