Atena Daemi ( Persian آتنا دائمی; born 1988 ) is a political prisoner in Iran who campaigns for civil, children's and human rights.

Youth and beginning of her activity as an activist

Atema Daemi began to be interested in human rights, especially women's rights , in her youth , because she felt herself suppressed in her role as a woman. She was involved in human rights at various levels, including handing out leaflets, discussing on social media and organizing protest events. She held vigils for political prisoners in Evin Prison and advocated an end to the death penalty in Iran.

arrest

Daemi was arrested and held in solitary confinement on October 21, 2014, and was interrogated for 86 days. She was then taken to Evin Prison. On March 15, 2015, she was charged with anti-regime propaganda , conspiracy against national security, insulting the Supreme Leaders and insulting the founders of the Islamic Revolution . Atena Daemi was sentenced to 14 years in prison. On February 15, 2017, her sentence was reduced to seven years in the appeals court.

Hunger strike

Daemi started a hunger strike on April 9, 2017 to protest the sentencing of her family members. Amnesty International asked for Daemi to be transferred from prison to hospital on May 17, 2017, describing the health consequences of the 40-day hunger strike. Doctors warned that hospitalization must be immediate. However, the authorities at Tehran's Evin Prison refused to allow her to be transferred to a hospital outside the prison for medical treatment.

In October 2017, Atena Daemi was hospitalized for an operation on her gallbladder. The release of the handcuffs in the hospital had to be fought for (also during the operation). In February, her mother and sister were briefly arrested and beaten by prison guards. In May 2018, she and two other prisoners were illegally transferred to Ghartschak prison, but then returned. All three human rights defenders have gone on hunger strike to protest the relocation. The move has been sharply criticized by Amnesty International.
