Atenquique is a town in the municipality of Tuxpan in the state of Jalisco and its appearance is completely dominated by the paper mill located there.

geography

location

The place is about 11 km from Tuxpan , on the highway and railway line between Colima and Guadalajara .

environment

The high consumption of wood has meant that the region around Atenquique has been deforested on a large scale and that wood has to be imported from abroad for paper production. The lack of sustainable planning in the past now has to be paid for at a high price: The region is to be reforested to prevent erosion and to prevent another disaster like 1955. However, the necessary funds are lacking for this.

history

In the approximately 1 km wide canyon near the small town of Tuxpan , paper has been produced since the late 1940s in order to use the water of the river and the wood of the nearby pine forests. A company-owned workers' settlement was connected to the factory. Triggered by persistent rainfall, on October 16, 1955, a flood of mud and rubble from the mountains destroyed the village. The damage was put at 10 billion pesos. The only existing building from this time are parts of the church at that time, which have now been integrated into a park. After this accident the factory and the place were rebuilt. The factory, which was one of the few state-owned companies to make a profit, was privatized in 1996 amid major protests: on the one hand because of the layoffs, which were not absolutely necessary in view of the positive balance sheets, but on the other hand because an important source of state income dried up.

economy

Paper is primarily produced in Atenquique. In addition, merchants have settled in order to supply the place with food. The business location Atenquique is ideal for paper production: The favorable transport links to the motorway and railway line between Colima and Guadalajara and the proximity to the raw materials water and wood ensure that the company in Atenquique is one of the most important paper manufacturers in Mexico. Today's owner is Grupo Industrial Durango .
