AtheOS (formerly AltOS ) is a free operating system for desktop use on x86 processors under the GNU General Public License . It was developed by Kurt Skauen . He has also ported various software to AtheOS , such as B. Apache and KHTML for the web browser ABrowse. Originally AtheOS was as AmigaOS - Clone planned, but is it nothing more than the standard window decorations remained.

This system has not been further developed since about 2001, but there is a spin-off with Syllable .

AtheOS and other systems

In contrast to the many Unix variants, which all implement the graphical user interface using an X Window System , AtheOS has a kernel with an integrated GUI . Furthermore, AtheOS only implements part of the POSIX standard.

AtheOS also has nothing to do with BeOS . They are neither source text nor binary compatible . The development of AtheOS started completely independently of the BeOS launch. The only thing that is similar to both projects is that they have removed the separation of the kernel and the graphical user interface, as was already the case with the classic Mac OS .

However, are C ++ - APIs similar enough of AtheOS and BeOS that the programmer Bill Hayden within six months of the application server and the interface kit from AtheOS on a 2.4 Linux kernel porting and could modify such is BeOS applications that run let. This work led to the Cosmoe operating system .
