Syllable (English for "syllable") is a lean and fast unixoides Desktop - Operating System for x86 processors . It represents a further development ( spin-off ) of the AtheOS operating system, the development of which was discontinued in 2001.

history

prehistory

AtheOS was developed practically single-handedly by Kurt Skauen and was characterized by boot times of a few seconds and rapid working speed. With the demise of Be Incorporated , the manufacturing company of BeOS , it saw a significant influx of developers and interested parties in the late 1990s. It was widely traded as a possible successor to the multimedia operating system.

AtheOS inventor Kurt Skauen, however, lost interest in his project around 2001 for private reasons and stopped the further development entirely. The inactivity of Skauens, who did not want any cooperation with the core of his operating system, and his almost complete silence led to a waning of interest.

In July 2002 AtheOS supporters and developers undertook Kristian van der Vliet , a spin-off and began to develop the operating system under the new name.

On July 15, 2002, he published a first version, which he gave the name Syllable . The first release of Syllable got the version number 0.4.0.

Syllable server

In addition to the actual Syllable operating system, also called Syllable Desktop , there is also a variant called Syllable Server , which is specially designed for use as a server operating system. This variant is based on a Linux kernel on which the graphical user interface known from Syllable runs. Syllable Server was announced at SylCon 2007, the first version of Syllable Server with version number 0.1 was released in October 2007. The current version is 0.4 from June 8, 2010.

Concepts

The graphical user interface is reminiscent of the BeOS operating system in some respects . However, Skauen always emphasized that AmigaOS was not his actual role model. The kernel is based on the POSIX standard. It is a monolithic kernel , like Linux, but it is more modularized than the Linux kernel , which is why a special boot loader ( GRUB ) is used to load the hard disk and file system drivers into memory. As the default shell is bash uses. With AFS, the AtheOS File System , Syllable has a modern 64-bit journaling file system based on the Be File System , which is comparable to other modern file systems.

License

Syllable is free software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) and is therefore also available in source code .

Innovations compared to AtheOS

Compared to the last version of AtheOS, Syllable has numerous new features , including:

  • an ATAPI driver that enables access to CD-ROM drives and also enables hard disk access in UDMA mode (hard disks were only addressed via the BIOS under AtheOS )
  • the direct support of numerous graphics cards
  • Support for USB mice and USB keyboards
  • SATA support (still in its early stages)
  • a largely configurable desktop
  • Sound support through a media framework
  • Use of MIME types to map files to programs
  • Some already usable applications such as a mail client (Whisper) and an IRC program
  • A taskbar and a Gnome- like start menu
  • about half a dozen different window decorations
  • a largely automatic installation as well as the availability of a live CD

software

Due to the early stage of Syllable, the amount of software is still quite small. Thanks to the extensive POSIX compatibility , some programs, mostly for the console, have already been ported to Syllable. Examples are ImageMagick , POV-Ray , Emacs , Apache and Samba . The GCC and NASM were ported to programs for software development . With sIDE, Syllable has an IDE, which is also still in an early development stage.

ABrowse

Another part of Syllable is the ABrowse browser , which has been taken over by AtheOS and is now based on WebKit and is licensed under the GPL. ABrowse was first developed in summer 2001 by Kurt Skauen on the basis of the KHTML component of KDE  2 for his AtheOS operating system. In December 2004, Arno Klenke announced that he had updated ABrowse to the KHTML component of KDE 3. After ABrowse was completely rewritten for Syllable version 0.6.4 released in July 2007, it is based on WebKit. Besides Links, ABrowse is currently the only graphical web browser for Syllable.
