Atheras (Ikaria)

Atheras ( Greek Αθέρας ( m. Sg. ) Also Όρος Αθέρας ( n. Sg. )) Is a mountain range on the Greek island of Ikaria .

The length of the mountain range that runs through the island, which is stretched from east to west, reaches up to 1,037 m. It divides the island into the more fertile and often forest-covered northern half and the rocky, inaccessible southern half.

In ancient times the mountains were called Pramnos ( Πράμνος ). Along with Lesbos and Smyrna, it was one of the documented growing areas for the so-called pramnian wine , probably a generic name for good quality dark wine , according to Athenaeus .
