Atlético Occidental

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Atlético Occidental was a sports club from Guadalajara whose football team played in the league amateur de Jalisco in the pioneering days of Mexican football .

history

The club was founded in 1906 by some young men who wanted to practice baseball . They practiced this sport on a barren place in the Colonia Moderna, which was in the immediate vicinity of the first sports field of the Club Unión founded in the same year . This club became the Guadalajara Football Club in 1908 and later the Club Deportivo Guadalajara .

When the young baseball players watched the goings-on at the neighboring Club Unión during a break, they asked about the rules of this sport. In this way they got in touch with the footballers and got a taste for them. A friendly game was organized immediately, which according to today's lore was the first official soccer game between two club teams in the city of Guadalajara and was won by Unión. A young man named Ignacio Calderón, who was a grandfather of the later national players and Chivas legends Ignacio and Carlos Calderón , worked on the side of Atlético Occidental .

The club was one of the founding members of the League Amateur de Jalisco introduced in 1908. When they first participated in the 1908/09 season, the footballers secured the runner-up behind their "teacher" Guadalajara FC. A few years later the association fell apart and was dissolved in October 1917.
