Atlantis Children's Museum
The ATLANTIS Children's Museum in Duisburg was a children's museum and the largest museum of its kind in Germany.
history
The museum was housed in the Werhahnmühle , an old flour mill on Duisburg's inner harbor . The historic building was converted with funding from the EU and the State of North Rhine-Westphalia . The museum was opened on January 8, 2004 and closed on November 4, 2007 in Duisburg for financial reasons.
The conception was based on the model of American children's museums : "hands on" and "minds on". The children are supposed to discover their environment in a playful way under pedagogical guidance. The museum had three main themes: under the city, in the city and above the city. In this way, the children should have new experiences and learn to see their environment from a different perspective. On April 19, 2008, the Legoland Discovery Center Duisburg opened in the museum. The management of the children's museum decided to move to a location in the neighboring town of Oberhausen .
Explorado
After the Discovery Center moved to Oberhausen, Cologne-based AWC AG opened the Explorado children's museum in May 2013 on the premises of the Werhahnmühle , which uses exhibits from the Atlantis collection and the former Legoland cinema, for example. The operator is now Explorado Operations GmbH, Cologne.
