Atrina texta is a type of mussel from the pen mussel family(Pinnidae). The range of the species is Southern California and Baja California as well as the Galápagos Islands.

features

The housing is elongated triangular and moderately swollen. It grows up to 26.5 cm long. It is comparatively wide in relation to its length, the L / B index is <2. The dorsal edge is almost straight. The ventral edge is concave at the front and slightly convex towards the rear. The rear edge is trimmed. The anterior sphincter is elongated and very small; it does not sit right at the edge at the front end. The posterior sphincter is located within the layer of mother-of-pearl . The mother-of-pearl layer extends to around two thirds of the length of the case (seen from the front edge).

The shell is thin and translucent. It is light horn brown, but becomes a little darker towards the front end. The surface of the dorsal three quarters shows about 26 to 30 fine, radial ribs, which are covered with short triangular thorns. The thorns are arranged in rows parallel to the edge. They are missing in the ventral quarter of the case. Here only asymptotic growth strips are present.

Similar species

Atrina texta has about 30 very fine, widely spaced, serrated ribs, while Atrina maura has 9 to 16 ribs with tubular, open spines. Atrina oldroydii , on the other hand, has only weak ribs with weak strips parallel to the edge.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area is narrowly limited compared to other pen mussels on the American west coast. It includes the southernmost part of California (near Jalama, 34.5 ° N, Santa Barbara County ), Baja California and the Gulf of California, as well as the waters around Santa Cruz Island ( Galápagos Islands ) (0 ° 45 'S).

Taxonomy

The species was first described by Leo George Hertlein, G. Dallas Hanna and Archibald McLure Strong in 1943. The species is generally recognized as a valid taxon. Peter Schultz and Markus Huber assign the species to the subgenus Servatrina .
