The Ostreida are an order of the mussels (Bivalvia), which belong to the infraclass Pteriomorphia within the Autolamellibranchiata . It is a predominantly marine group of mussels. The oldest Ostreida are known from the Triassic .
characterization
The housings of the Ostreida are almost always unevenly hinged and irregular. The shell is predominantly calcitic . It consists of a leafy calcitic outer layer and inner calcitic layers. In some forms there may still be a thin aragonitic layer with a cross-lamellar microstructure. The foot and byssus are reduced at an early postlarval stage. The lock is largely reduced, the ligament is mostly external.
Way of life
The Ostreida are mostly marine mussels that also penetrate brackish water areas. Only one group goes into fresh water . They are usually cemented to the substrate or lie freely on the sediment with the right or left flap . The cemented forms often form large colonies (oyster beds).
Taxonomy
The order Ostreida was established by Férussac in 1822 as ordre Ostracés . Since the name was still assigned to Férussac in the later Latinization, he is also considered the author of the taxon in modern taxonomy. The Ostreida order currently (2016) includes the following superfamilies and families:
- Superfamily Ostreoidea Wilkes, 1810
- Family † Arctostreidae Vialov, 1983

Earlier, the order Pectinida was placed as a superfamily to the order Ostreida. The superfamily Pterioidea is listed as an order in older classifications.
