The Autolamellibranchiata (also Autolamellibranchia or Autobranchiata or Autobranchia) are a large group of mussels (Bivalvia). They make up the vast majority of the mussel taxa and are the sister group of the Protobranchia .
characterization
The housings of the autolamellibranchiata are extremely diverse. The shells are aragonitic with mother-of-pearl, cross-lamellar or prismatic structures. The representatives of some groups (e.g. the oysters ) form their valves from calcite . As autapomorphy , i.e. H. A unique selling point is the special formation of the gills (eulamellibranch), which is further characteristically modified in the subgroups. Another important feature is the byssus apparatus on the foot, which is used to attach to the substrate .
Systematics
The original name of the taxon is "Autolamellibranchiata" and comes from Karl Grobben . However, for the sake of simplicity, the abbreviated form Autobranchiata is also used today without changing the concept of the taxon.
The Autolamellibranchia are in systematics based on cladistic methods, the sister group of the Protobranchia. This sister group relationship is considered to be secured. The autolamellibranchiata appear in the hierarchical classification as a subclass, infraclass or as a taxon without rank.
The Autolamellibranchiata contain two large subgroups, which also have a sister group relationship: the Pteriomorphia and the Heteroconchia.

Some authors divide the subclass Pteriomorphia into three groups: Isofilibranchia (order Mytilida ), Prionodonta (orders Cyrtodonta and Arcida ) and Eupteriomorphia (orders Pterida , Limida , Ostreida , Pectinida ).
