The Arcida (in older publications also Arcoida ) are an order of the mussels (Bivalvia), which belongs to the infraclass Pteriomorphia within the Autolamellibranchiata . It is a group of mussels found exclusively in the sea. The oldest Arcida are already known from the Lower Ordovician .
features
The cases of the Arcida are often egg-shaped and equilateral, more rarely aberrant . The shell is exclusively aragonitic with predominantly cross-lamellar and prismatic microstructures. The lock bar is varied and can also be reduced. The lock itself toothless or taxodont , or other types of teeth occur. The sphincters are uniform or only slightly irregular. The foot is usually large and strong.
Geographical distribution, habitat and way of life
The Arcida are exclusively marine mussels that are mostly attached to the substrate with the help of organic byssus . They usually live on or only half buried in the sediment.
