The Pteriida are an order of the mussels (Bivalvia), which belong to the infraclass Pteriomorphia within the Autolamellibranchiata . It is an exclusively marine group of mussels. The oldest Pteriida are known from the Lower Ordovician .
characterization
The housings of the Pteriida are always more or less equally-valued (Pteroidea) or also equally-valued (Pinnoidea). The shell consists of an inner layer with aragonitic , mother-of-pearl microstructures and an outer, calcitic layer made up of simple prisms. In some groups this calcitic position is absent. The castle is largely reduced. The anterior sphincter is usually more or less significantly reduced. Most forms have a byssus .
Way of life
The Pteriida are exclusively marine mussels, which are mostly attached to the substrate with the help of organic byssus . They mostly live on the sediment, some forms also live cemented to the substrate or half-buried in the sediment.
Systematics
According to the latest classification by Bieler & Mikkelsen (2006), the Pteriida contain three superfamilies. Among them is the superfamily Ostreoidea, which the majority of malacologists regard as an order. The two remaining superfamilies
- Superfamily Pterioidea Gray , 1847 (e.g. family wing mussels (Pteriidae Gray , 1847))
- Superfamily Pinnoidea Leach , 1819 (e.g. noble pen shell ( Pinna nobilis ))
are held by some authors in the rank of subordination. Then there are the exclusively fossil superfamilies
- Superfamily † Ambonychioidea Miller, 1877
- Inoceramidae pediment , 1852
- Superfamily † Cercomyoidea Crickmay, 1936
